I had the privilege to attend a small K-12 school that placed emphasis on volunteer work, student internships, and relationship building between older students and younger ones.
In high school, I completed two internships at the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society (VIRCS), spending the majority of my internship working with children from various cultures.
Throughout high school, I was paired with younger students and spent time as a mentor weekly. I also enjoyed volunteering as a classroom assistant in the elementary classrooms.
I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I had in high school; it was through volunteering within my school community that I discovered my passion for child and youth care as a career choice.
Now, as a second-year student in the child and youth care field, I have some experience with post-secondary education. I have taken post-secondary classes on the topics of family sociology (issues, patterns, and processes), helping and counselling skills (specifically counselling children and youth), racial and cultural awareness when working with children and youth, social justice studies, and gender studies. Many of my first year research papers primarily focused on the correlation between toxic masculinity in young boys and their mental health as youth and adults. The effects of toxic masculinity was my main research goal for my first year studies.
